Can Godfall Really Help PS5 to Be a Success at Launch?

  • Godfall is the first confirmed game for PS5.
  • The game is a fantasy looter slasher from Counterplay Games.
  • It will also be available on PC.

At The Game Awards 2019, Counterplay Games revealed Godfall, the first confirmed PS5 game. The developer calls it a “looter slasher” – gameplay will offer melee combat and loot that players can use to change their character build.

The response to the game’s announcement is as positive as Sony could have hoped for. The trailer has been viewed 509,984 times and has 17K likes compared to 727 dislikes, likely from gamers unhappy that the game isn’t available now.

Godfall has fans feeling excited for PS5 without knowing what it will look like or how much it will cost. Many fans are excited about the idea of playing Godfall with their friends and looking for the best loot, which is the sort of gameplay that has kept people enjoying games like Warframe for years. No DLC and updates have been confirmed for Godfall, but if the game does offer that, it could be a game that people play for hours.

However, Godfall may not be the game that helps Sony to sell a huge number of consoles. The same thing that makes Godfall look so good is also what could stop it from helping sell PS5 consoles.

Several other developers have released games offering co-op gameplay and loot, like BioWare’s Anthem. Anthem did not have a successful launch and criticism only hurt sales. When a game like this is good, one player will ask their friends to buy it so that they can all play. If a game like this is bad, those who are playing it may stop finding it fun.

To be a success and sell PS5s, Godfall needs to be great on launch day. If it can do that, then it could just be one of the best games on the console.
